How do you organise a green event, i.e. a sustainable team event?

It starts with the format: will the team event be held online, in a hybrid format or in a traditional on-site format? Depending on the format, there are different things to consider to ensure that the team event is a green event. Choosing the right partners for the team event is the decisive factor here. There is also the option of donating to a climate protection project and doing some good in the process.

There is significantly more to consider for a physical team event to be a green event than for an online or hybrid team event. Here are the most important points.

  • Catering: Regional and seasonal catering is essential for a green event. It is important to consider where the food is grown and how it is processed. Calculating the amount of food required for the participants is also an important factor. Ultimately, no food should be thrown away.   • Waste management concept: How is waste collected? How can waste be separated sustainably? These are important questions when it comes to a sustainable waste management concept. There are providers with a ‘green seal’ who are committed to taking waste separation particularly seriously and subsequently attaching great importance to proper recycling.
  • Transport: travelling to the event is often the most ‘serious’ part of a green event. Are all participants flown in, or is there a solution for travelling by train? This can also be a decisive factor in choosing the location for the green event. A location with good transport links is important. To make an international team event as sustainable as possible, a hybrid event can also be a solution.
  • Providers: The choice of location and team event provider is also an important factor in a green event. How much attention do providers pay to sustainable concepts and how socially responsible is their treatment of employees? A green event as a hybrid team event? No problem!

However, it is often crucial in team-building processes that employees come together and that energy and emotion are palpable in the room. This means that most resources are consumed by travel to and from the venue – and this, in turn, can be reduced by a hybrid team event – making it a green event!

The teams only travel short distances and meet regionally in small groups. The small groups are connected via online technology. This creates a sense of togetherness within the group – and at the same time saves precious energy. When it comes to technology, the same factors are important as for an online team event.

Why have a green event at all?

Well, the need to protect the environment is obvious. At BITOU, we believe that the events industry should do its part. Above all, team events offer the potential for good ideas to have a lasting impact and be disseminated further, simply because of the number of participants.

Furthermore, the issue of sustainability is often anchored in corporate values or guidelines. Here, it is important to get employees on board and familiarise them with the topic. Only then can they identify with the company. In general, identification with the company is a very important issue. According to the Gallup study, employees feel less and less connected to their team and employer. This suggests a lack of identification and often has a negative impact on work performance. This is where we need to take action and counteract this with formats such as green events or ‘normal’ team building.

What green events does BITOU offer?

We have taken a close look at all our team events and drastically reduced our consumption of resources. As a result, BITOU team events produce virtually no waste – and if they do, it is recycled. Here are a few specific examples:

Our Future City used to be built on a disposable hard foam board – today we use reusable screen printing plates. Consumption here is limited to the covering and paper.

For the chain reaction team event, we usually only use adhesive tape, a few balloons and cable ties. For the team event Rollercoaster, only four cable ties per participant are used, while for Adventure Everest, Before Mars and other products, one to three sheets of paper per participant are used. And the following team events do not require any materials at all: Haka, Smart City Challenge, Highland Games, Team Monopoly, Get the Code, Quiz Shows, Across the Hotel, Sustainability Challenge and Wind Park.
