When team spirit comes to life
The Smart Team Challenge is a tablet-based team event in which teams, split into small groups, head to designated locations, complete tasks, collect points and compete together for victory. It’s not just about getting as much done as possible – it’s about planning wisely, coordinating with one another and developing the best strategy as a team.
This is precisely what makes for an event that energises, brings people together and re-energises the group after a long day of meetings.
Event schedule – movement, strategy and shared ambition
Welcome & Challenge Briefing – The starting signal is given
To begin with, the BITOU facilitator welcomes all participants and introduces the challenge. The teams learn how the game works, how to score points and what they need to bear in mind during the challenge. It becomes clear straight away that it’s not just about setting off quickly, but about making smart decisions.
Each team is given a tablet and an overview of the playing field, the visible coordinates and the final coordinate. Then the first strategic discussion begins: Which route should we take? Which tasks should we tackle first? And how can we make it back in time?
The challenge begins – find the coordinates, complete the tasks, collect points
As soon as the teams set off, their surroundings become the playing field. On their tablets, they see various coordinates, behind which tasks are hidden. There, they’ll find quiz questions, puzzles, photo missions, video tasks or augmented reality elements. If desired, active team stations can also be incorporated, where BITOU supervises small additional tasks on site.
It quickly becomes clear how well the team works together: who reads out the tasks? Who thinks strategically? Who motivates the others? Who keeps an eye on the time? Solving the tasks together fosters a high level of interaction – and, as a bonus, the participants get to know each other better within their small team.
Working as a team – strategy trumps knee-jerk reactions
Throughout the challenge, teams are constantly faced with decisions. Should they head for the nearest coordinate, or is it worth tackling a task further away that’s worth more points? Should they invest time in producing a particularly good creative video, or is speed what counts? This is precisely where the special appeal of the Smart Team Challenge lies.
Teams can communicate with the project management team via the app at any time. BITOU can see where the teams are via the tracking system, can send messages and remains available via chat or by phone. Navigation to the next coordinate or the destination is also possible directly within the game.
Return, photos & prize-giving ceremony – A moment to share as the event draws to a close
Once the game time is up, all teams return to the agreed meeting point. There, the team that has scored the most points is announced. But the finale isn’t just about numbers: things really come to life when the photos and videos taken during the game are shown.
Then everyone can see how differently the teams tackled the tasks, what creative ideas emerged and which moments were particularly funny. Finally, the winning team is announced – often amid much cheering, a sense of achievement and a strong feeling of togetherness.
Smart City Challenge
The Smart Team Challenge can also be held in cities. In this case, the surroundings themselves become part of the event: landmarks, well-known squares, special locations or routes between the conference venue and the restaurant can be incorporated into the itinerary.
This creates added value, particularly in cities such as Frankfurt, Berlin, Hamburg or Munich: the teams not only take part in the challenge, but also get to know the location better at the same time. This is particularly suitable for international groups, new locations, conferences in unfamiliar cities or events where the journey itself is intended to be an experience.
Classification within the BITOU 4-level system
The Smart Team Challenge is part of Level 1 – classic team event – of the BITOU 4-level system. This level is all about bringing teams together, generating energy and creating a shared experience.
The format is particularly suitable when a team needs to rediscover a sense of light-heartedness, movement and connection after periods of intense work. It is not about in-depth analysis, but about energising the team, having fun and sharing moments of success.
At the same time, initial patterns may become apparent during the event: Who takes the lead? Who thinks strategically? Who contributes creative ideas? Who motivates the team? If these observations are to be explored in greater depth later on, they can be built upon using Level 2 or Level 3 formats.
The benefits of the Smart Team Challenge at a glance:
✔ Exercise after intensive meetings: The Smart Team Challenge is the perfect way to reinvigorate the group after long periods of meetings. Participants get out of the office, get some exercise and enjoy an active experience together.
✔ A great experience in a small team: In small groups, conversations, joint decisions and small moments of success quickly emerge. As a result, colleagues often get to know each other on a more personal level than they would in a normal working context.
✔ Strategic thinking rather than simply going through the motions: It is not the number of coordinates visited that determines victory, but the best strategy. Teams must prioritise, plan and make decisions together.
✔ Lots of fun thanks to creative tasks: Photo and video assignments bring a sense of light-heartedness and humour, and create plenty of moments that people will still be talking about later on. The joint debrief at the end, in particular, makes for a truly memorable experience.
✔ Promotes cross-departmental collaboration: Teams can be deliberately put together in such a way that people who have little to do with one another in their day-to-day work are brought together. This fosters new connections and cross-functional links.
✔ Flexible adaptation to the venue and occasion: The starting point, destination, radius and tasks can be planned individually. Company-specific questions or your own content can also be incorporated.
✔ Getting started without a high barrier to entry: Participants do not need any specific prior knowledge. The app provides clear guidance through the game, whilst BITOU supports the group and remains available.
What our customers say

The Smart Team Challenge as part of the BITOU event tour
The Smart Team Challenge is a classic Level 1 format. It energises participants, gets people moving and creates shared positive experiences. The focus is deliberately on fun, competition and connection – without the event feeling like a training session.
From here, the team’s journey can take various paths:
- Level 1 – classic team event:
The Smart Team Challenge provides energy, exercise and a shared experience. Anyone wishing to continue with the energising activities can follow on with, for example, a Team Olympics or the Highland Games. - Level 2 – Intelligent team building:
If the aim is to gain a clearer understanding of how teamwork functions following the challenge, the Chain Reaction XXL is an ideal choice. Here, the focus is less on competition and more on the shared goal. - Level 3 – Team development:
If the experience gives rise to specific development questions, programmes such as Adventure Everest or Before Mars can form the next step. - Level 4 – Team coaching:
For teams facing specific challenges or dealing with more profound areas of change, bespoke team coaching may be beneficial.
In this way, an action-packed team event can, if required, serve as the starting point for a larger team trip.
