The Christmas Chain Reaction combines creative building, a festive atmosphere and a real sense of team spirit. Participants plan, tinker, build and test their own sections of a large chain reaction – using tubes, wheels, funnels, balls, Christmas decorations and lots of little ideas that all have to fit together in the end. The aim: to work together to create a functioning chain reaction that lights up the Christmas tree in the grand finale.
Event schedule – From the initial idea to the illuminated Christmas tree
Welcome & a festive start – The spark is ignited
To begin with, all participants gather together. The BITOU facilitator welcomes the group, explains the task and gets the team in the right frame of mind for their shared mission: within the allotted time, they must create a large chain reaction that will light up the Christmas tree at the end.
Excitement builds right from this initial phase. The materials are laid out, initial ideas begin to take shape, and the teams sense that this isn’t just about listening, but about working together. The festive atmosphere, complete with decorations, music and a wintry setting, ensures that the construction task immediately becomes a festive team experience.
Team-building & the ideation phase – Individual groups come together to form a unified system
The teams are then formed. Depending on the objective, these can be put together at random or deliberately mixed across departments. Each team is allocated its own area and a selection of materials, which they will use to create a section of the chain reaction.
Now the first round of coordination begins: Which idea suits our materials? How does our section start? How do we pass on the momentum? And how do we link up with the next team? This is precisely where a creative game turns into genuine collaboration – because each team builds for itself, but never just for itself alone.
Construction phase – tinkering, testing and adding a festive touch
Now it’s time to plan, hammer away, experiment, rebuild and test again. Pipes, wheels, funnels, balls, model trains and Christmas decorations are combined to form small mechanical devices that will later become part of a larger whole. BITOU provides a wide range of materials for this purpose and, on request, tools for hire.
During this phase, different strengths naturally come to the fore: some come up with creative ideas, others keep an eye on the process, whilst others test things patiently until the transition works. At the same time, the teams have to keep liaising with neighbouring groups: is the impulse high, low, fast or slow? When does our section start? What does the next team need from us?
Finale & short transfer – When the Christmas tree lights up
To round things off, all the teams gather together around the chain reaction they have created. The tension mounts. An initial impulse is set in motion – and then the reaction continues, section by section. Every transition counts, every little mechanism becomes important, every contribution is part of the bigger picture.
When the chain reaction works and the Christmas tree lights up brightly, that is precisely the moment this activity is designed for: cheers, laughter, relief and a genuine sense of togetherness. Optionally, a brief reflection session can take place afterwards: What went well? Where did we need to make improvements? And what parallels are there with collaboration in everyday life?
